Three terrorists were killed and six others managed to escape during a Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) operation near Rehmanikhel in Mianwali on Friday, according to an official statement.
The intelligence-based operation (IBO) was aimed at arresting suspected militants planning attacks on police posts. However, the terrorists opened fire on the approaching CTD team. In the exchange, the militants reportedly killed three of their own, while the remaining six fled the scene.
Security forces recovered rifles, hand grenades, bullets, and explosives from the bodies of the slain terrorists. A search operation and area blockade are currently underway to apprehend the fugitives. The identification process of the deceased militants is in progress.
The CTD revealed that the group had finalised plans for coordinated attacks targeting police installations in the area.
Simultaneous Attacks in KP
Meanwhile, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police reported foiling two separate attacks on police posts in Fatehkhel (Bannu district) and Takia (Bara tehsil, Khyber district). Unidentified miscreants launched the failed assaults late Thursday night.
Quick response teams repelled both attacks, showcasing professionalism and preparedness. However, one young man sustained injuries during the exchange of fire in Bannu.
Top Officials React
Inspector General KP Police Zulfiqar Hameed praised his force for their vigilance and bravery.
“Our soldiers remained alert and showed immense courage. Their morale is high, and they are committed to defeating terrorism,” he said.
He announced cash rewards and commendation certificates for the personnel involved.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also commended the CTD and KP Police:
“The bravery shown in Mianwali and Bannu has thwarted terrorists’ nefarious plans. The nation is proud of these heroes,” he stated.
Naqvi highlighted the CTD’s professionalism and stressed that Pakistan’s law enforcement agencies remain determined to eradicate terrorism.
Terror Wave Intensifies
Pakistan has seen a surge in terrorist incidents, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, since the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) unilaterally ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022.
Earlier this month, a policeman was killed in Bannu, while a bomb attack in Khuzdar claimed six lives, including three students, and injured over 40 others, most of them schoolchildren.
The federal government continues to emphasise counterterrorism efforts as a top national security priority, backed by the military and intelligence agencies.
