POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has fixed June 4 as the hearing date for a reference filed against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub Khan. The reference accuses him of concealing assets and election rigging.
The complaint was filed by Omar Ayub’s rival candidate, Babar Nawaz Khan. The Election Commission will formally hear the case on June 4 to determine whether Omar Ayub meets the constitutional requirements of being “Sadiq and Amin” (truthful and trustworthy).
Earlier, the Islamabad High Court had lifted a stay order on April 18, allowing the Election Commission to proceed with the inquiry after hearing all parties. The court also rejected Omar Ayub’s petition to halt the inquiry.
Subsequently, on April 23, Omar Ayub approached the Supreme Court, arguing that the Election Commission no longer had jurisdiction to act since the 60-day legal period under the Election Act 2017 had expired on April 17. He claimed the ECP’s ongoing actions were illegal.
The upcoming hearing on June 4 will be crucial, as the case’s outcome could affect Omar Ayub’s status as a member of the National Assembly and his position as Leader of the Opposition.
