Fazlur Rehman Calls for ‘Internal Change’ in PTI-Led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government

Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Saturday called for a “change” in the PTI-led government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, but emphasized that such a shift should originate from within the ruling party itself, rather than being orchestrated by the opposition.

Speaking at a press conference in Peshawar, Fazl addressed growing speculation over possible efforts to bring about regime change in KP. His remarks come amid concerns expressed by the PML-N-led federal government about the performance of the PTI in the province and the deteriorating security situation.

“My advice would be that there should be a change in the province,” Fazl said, “but if the PTI is in the majority, then the change should be from within the majority of the PTI. If the same people come together to bring a change in the provincial government, then it will be better.”

He further clarified that he does not support an opposition-led push to topple the PTI government. Instead, he believes that an internal political realignment within PTI ranks would be more legitimate and stable.

The JUI-F leader reiterated his party’s stance that the PTI's majority in KP is “fake” and the result of electoral rigging. Despite this belief, he acknowledged that a conventional political struggle may not be feasible at this time, and thus internal reform would be the most pragmatic path forward.

These comments come in the wake of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s meetings with key political figures from KP, reportedly to gauge the ground situation and political dynamics in the province. The federal coalition maintains that PTI has failed to deliver during over a decade of governance in KP, especially in terms of security and public welfare.

In response, the PTI has warned against any move to destabilize or topple its government through “constitutional manipulation”, asserting its electoral mandate.

With mounting pressure and a volatile political climate, Fazlur Rehman’s call for change from within may signal a strategic shift in the opposition’s approach to handling PTI’s hold in KP.
