POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Jr., grandson of former Prime Minister and founder of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, has officially announced his intention to launch a new political party, signaling a bold entry into Pakistan’s political landscape.
Speaking at a press conference at the Lahore Press Club, Bhutto Jr. said the party’s formal name and structure would be announced soon, but its slogan would be “Jai Awam” (Victory to the People) — a revival and expansion of his grandfather’s populist legacy.
“The slogan of roti, kapra aur makan (bread, clothing, and shelter) is still relevant,” Bhutto Jr. said, “but today, we must also include bijli, gas, aur pani (electricity, gas, and water). These six basic needs will be our battle cry.”
In a sharp criticism of the current PPP leadership, Bhutto Jr. accused the Zardari faction of corrupting the party’s original vision, saying, “They’ve turned Jai Bhutto into a slogan for corruption.” He added that his new party would return to the original spirit of serving the masses, especially the working class and farmers.
Bhutto Jr. expressed concern about the growing influence of corporate farming, which he claimed was threatening land ownership and economic stability for small farmers, particularly in Punjab and Sindh.
“The farmers of Punjab are the backbone of our economy — where are the parties who claim to speak for them today?” he asked. He urged Sindh’s farmers to rise up as well, and hinted at a joint movement toward Islamabad if their voices continued to be ignored.
The move by Bhutto Jr. could mark a major ideological shift in Pakistan’s political spectrum, especially among disillusioned PPP supporters and rural communities feeling left behind by mainstream politics.
Political analysts say this could signal the beginning of a grassroots populist revival, possibly challenging both PPP and PTI strongholds in rural constituencies.
