FC Deployed Outside Fazlur Rehman's Residence Amid Rising Security Threats

The federal government has ordered the deployment of Frontier Constabulary (FC) personnel outside the residence of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman in Dera Ismail Khan, citing heightened security concerns following recent threats and incidents involving his family and party members.

In a letter dated June 29, the Ministry of Interior instructed the FC commandant in Peshawar to station “one platoon” of FC forces at the JUI-F chief’s residence “to avoid any untoward situation”. The decision follows directives issued by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The move comes after a recent incident involving Fazlur Rehman’s son, Asjad Mahmood, whose vehicle was intercepted by armed men on the highway between DI Khan and Lakki Marwat last month. The foiled attack has added to the growing list of threats targeting JUI-F leadership.

Following the incident, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif personally visited Maulana Fazlur Rehman at his Islamabad residence to express concern. According to the PM Media Office, he inquired after Mahmood’s well-being and issued immediate directives for the arrest of those responsible.

Security risks have increasingly targeted JUI-F leadership in recent years, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

·       On May 15, a powerful explosion targeted the vehicle of Maulana Noorullah in South Waziristan. The JUI-F leader escaped unharmed.

·       On April 25, a roadside IED blast in Kalat claimed the lives of JUI-F leader Maulana Abdullah Nachari and two women, while injuring five others.

·       On March 14, a mosque blast in South Waziristan during Friday prayers seriously injured district JUI-F chief Abdullah Nadeem and three others.

·       On March 2, two senior JUI-F leaders were killed in Khuzdar’s Zehri area in Balochistan in a targeted attack.

These escalating incidents underline the persistent militant threats faced by religious-political figures in Pakistan, particularly those affiliated with the JUI-F. The latest deployment of FC personnel is seen as a critical step to bolster security around the veteran political and religious leader.
