Former Senator Abbas Afridi Dies After Gas Explosion Injuries

Former federal minister and senator Abbas Afridi died on Friday due to severe burn injuries he sustained during a gas leak explosion a day earlier in Kohat. The tragic incident also injured three other individuals.

According to Rescue 1122 spokesperson Bilal Ahmad Faizi, Afridi was initially rushed to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Kohat along with three others. Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was later airlifted to a specialized burn centre in Kharian, Punjab. Despite medical efforts, Afridi succumbed to his injuries.

Kohat police spokesperson Nouman Ali told Dawn.com that Afridi’s body was brought back to Kohat earlier today. He said the blast occurred inside a Hujra (guest house) where Afridi and three companions — Dilnawaz, Javed Afridi, and Nadeem — were present. The explosion, caused by a gas leak, was so intense that it damaged the walls of the structure. The injured have been shifted to a divisional headquarters hospital for further treatment.

Afridi’s funeral is scheduled for today at 5 PM in his hometown Babri Banda, Kohat.

Condolences poured in from political circles and across the country. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi expressed deep sorrow over the death, extending condolences to Afridi’s father Senator Shamim Afridi, his brother Amjad Afridi (Provincial Information Secretary of the PPP), and other family members.

“We all share in this grief with the family. Abbas Afridi was a committed public servant,” Kundi said in his message. He also directed authorities to launch a transparent inquiry into the nature and cause of the explosion.

Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Deputy Chairman Zahid Khan also expressed their sorrow, remembering Afridi as a “sociable and sincere person” who served the public with dedication.

Afridi served as a federal minister and was known for his political contributions and community engagement, especially in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region.
