Joe Biden Diagnosed with Aggressive Stage 4 Prostate Cancer, Receives Bipartisan Support

Former U.S. President Joe Biden, 82, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, his office confirmed in a statement released Sunday. The diagnosis, made on Friday following Biden's complaints of urinary symptoms, marks a serious turn in the health of the nation's 46th president.

According to medical experts, cancer that has spread beyond the prostate is classified as stage 4 — the most advanced form. Despite the severity, Biden's cancer is described as “hormone-sensitive,” a factor which can make it more manageable with modern treatments. His Gleason score, which assesses the aggressiveness of prostate cancer, was reported at 9 out of 10, indicating a high-risk case.

Dr. Herbert Lepor, a leading urologist at NYU Langone, commented, “While a Gleason score of 9 indicates a very aggressive cancer, men can still live five to ten years and even longer with proper treatment.” Dr. Chris George of Northwestern Health Network added that while metastatic prostate cancer is not considered curable, it is increasingly treatable.

Biden and his family are currently consulting with oncologists to determine the best course of action.

The news comes months after Biden abruptly ended his reelection bid last July following a shaky debate performance against Republican rival Donald Trump. Concerns over his mental and physical health had been mounting throughout his presidency, prompting widespread debate within his own party.

Despite their political differences, Trump offered a rare moment of unity. In a post on Truth Social, he wrote:
“Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”

Vice President Kamala Harris also issued a statement of support:
“Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership.”

Democrats and Republicans alike shared well wishes for the former president, who has largely kept a low profile since leaving office in January 2025. Biden has made limited public appearances, though he delivered a speech in April defending the Social Security Administration from proposed Trump-era cuts.

Earlier this year, Biden rejected suggestions in two recently published books that he had experienced cognitive decline in the final year of his presidency. Appearing on ABC’s The View, he said bluntly, “They are wrong.”

The diagnosis is especially poignant given Biden’s history with cancer. In 2015, he lost his son Beau Biden to brain cancer. In 2022, Biden revived the Obama-era Cancer Moonshot initiative with the goal of reducing cancer deaths by 50% over the next 25 years.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that of the 236,659 prostate cancer diagnoses in 2021, around 8% were advanced-stage. Biden’s case is among those rare but severe instances.

As the former president begins his treatment journey, the nation watches closely — not just in concern for his health, but in recognition of his decades of public service, resilience, and the bipartisan compassion his diagnosis has inspired.
