KP Launches Major Anti-Militancy Operation in Bajaur, Khyber

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has launched a large-scale military operation against militants in Bajaur and Khyber districts after peace talks between local elders and the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also referred to as Fitnatul Khawarij, collapsed.

According to official sources, nearly 800 militants are currently present in the two districts, with around 300 operating in Bajaur’s Mamond tehsil and over 350 in Khyber. Authorities report that more than 80 percent of the fighters are Afghan nationals.

The failed jirga in Bajaur had made three key demands, including that the militants vacate the area, but the TTP refused. The Mamond tehsil, home to more than 300,000 residents, has seen mass displacement, with over 40,000 people fleeing their homes so far.

Malakand Division Commissioner Abid Wazir told Aaj News that arrangements have been made for displaced families, with 107 government buildings in Khar being used as shelters and a tent city set up at the Khar Sports Complex. “All displaced persons will be provided with basic facilities,” he assured.

Earlier, the provincial home ministry issued a notification announcing a three-day operation with a complete curfew from August 11 to August 14 in more than 30 villages, including Lagri, Guwati, Bad Siya, Kamar, Zagai, Damadula, Sultan Baig, and Shenkot. The curfew began at 11 am on Sunday and will end at 11 am on Wednesday, with strict instructions for residents to remain indoors.

The administration warned that any violations would be the responsibility of the offenders. Many families have already evacuated to safer areas, while others are being relocated to government camps ahead of the operation.

The operation marks one of the largest recent security crackdowns in KP, as authorities aim to dismantle militant strongholds and restore stability in the border regions.
