The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore has rejected the police’s request for a further physical remand of accused Sanam Javed in the protest case. The court sent her to jail on judicial remand, concluding a six-day physical remand period. This decision was made after the police had sought an additional 10-day physical remand for further interrogation.
Details of the Hearing
The hearing, led by Judge Irfan Haider, saw the police present Sanam Javed in court after completing her six-day physical remand. During the hearing, the prosecution requested an extension of the remand, arguing that further interrogation was needed for the case.
However, Mian Ali Ashfaq, the lawyer representing the accused, strongly opposed the request. He argued that the case was politically motivated and pointed out that terrorism charges were added to the case 80 days after the original incident, which he deemed both illegal and unconstitutional. According to the defense, the charges against Sanam Javed were bailable and no significant investigation had been conducted by the police.
Court’s Decision on Judicial Remand
After hearing the arguments from both sides, the court rejected the police's request for further physical remand and opted to send Sanam Javed to judicial remand instead. This move marked a significant development in the case, as the defense had also requested that the accused be discharged from the case altogether due to lack of evidence and unlawful charges.
The Case Background
Sanam Javed was arrested on February 8, following protests, and a case was filed against her at Islampura Police Station. The inclusion of terrorism-related charges against her sparked debates, with critics accusing the police of adding these charges for political reasons.
The legal proceedings in the case will continue, with the court’s decision to send the accused to judicial remand marking a crucial step in the ongoing case.
