A Lahore Sessions Court has dismissed a petition seeking the registration of a case against former President Dr. Arif Alvi for allegedly using blasphemous language. The Additional Sessions Judge ruled that the matter falls outside the court’s jurisdiction and advised the petitioner to approach the relevant cybercrime authority.
The petition was filed by a citizen, Prince Adnan, through his counsel Muhammad Mudassar Chaudhry, who alleged that Dr. Arif Alvi used blasphemous words in a video available on YouTube. According to the petitioner, a formal complaint had been lodged with the police, but no FIR had been registered.
Court’s Reasoning:
In the written verdict, the judge noted that the government has established a National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency specifically to deal with online and social media-related complaints. The court maintained that since the complaint pertains to a video circulated online, it is not within the court’s jurisdiction to order registration of a case.
The ruling advised the petitioner to approach the appropriate legal forum, namely the Federal Investigation Agency’s Cyber Crime Wing, for further action if warranted.
This decision closes a controversial attempt to initiate legal proceedings against a former head of state over alleged blasphemy, shifting the responsibility to federal cyber authorities.
