POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

Controversy erupted within the ranks of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) as Maryam Ikram, a YouTuber associated with the party, found herself at the center of a political storm following her nomination for a reserved seat in the National Assembly. Within days of her nomination, it was swiftly withdrawn amid vehement objections from party members questioning her political experience and commitment.
Maryam Ikram, known for her presence on platforms like TikTok and YouTube, had managed to secure a place on the party's list of women nominated for reserved seats in the National Assembly. However, her nomination drew sharp criticism from within the party, with senior members raising concerns about her lack of political credentials and history of social contribution.
Critics within the PML-N pointed out that while they had been serving the party diligently for years, Maryam Ikram's sudden nomination raised questions about favoritism and undermined the contributions of longstanding party members.
The controversy deepened as images surfaced showing Maryam Ikram wearing attire associated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and participating in activities seemingly supportive of the rival party. Despite her past affiliations, she had been actively involved in creating content against PTI and its leadership on social media platforms.
Responding to the backlash, PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif intervened and directed the party leadership to remove Maryam Ikram from the list of nominees for reserved seats. Subsequently, the party swiftly acted upon the directive and requested her withdrawal from the assembly membership.
In the wake of the controversy, a special committee was formed within the PML-N to investigate the circumstances surrounding Maryam Ikram's nomination, aiming to ensure accountability within the party ranks.
Despite attempts to reach out to federal and Punjab information ministers for an official response, there has been no statement from them regarding the incident.
Maryam Ikram, while initially expressing gratitude for her nomination, later acknowledged the objections raised by party activists and affirmed her commitment to the party.
As the saga unfolds, Maryam Ikram is expected to inform the Election Commission of Pakistan about her withdrawal from the nomination before March 19, paving the way for the nomination of a more established party activist to the reserved seat.
