President Zardari, PM Shehbaz Vow Greater Protections for Workers on International Labour Day

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed the government's commitment to workers' welfare, safety, and rights in messages marking International Labour Day on Thursday.

In separate statements, both leaders paid tribute to the country's hardworking men and women and acknowledged the central role of labour in Pakistan's national progress and economic development.

President Zardari, in his message aired on state media, stated, “We reiterate our commitment to workers’ autonomy, fair wages, a safe environment and social security. Our workers are our pride.” He added that the country must equip workers and youth with modern skills to stay competitive in a rapidly changing global economy.

The president also called for the creation of a comprehensive system for skill development and emphasized fostering a fair and inclusive labour environment in Pakistan. “Let’s promote meaningful policies, inclusive development, and a culture in the country where the role of every worker is respected,” he said.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed the president’s sentiments, stating that Pakistan is committed to promoting safe, healthy, and dignified working conditions. He emphasized that the constitutional protections for workers are aligned with international labour standards.

Highlighting legislative and administrative reforms, the premier noted that Pakistan is actively working to meet international obligations. “For the first time, every worker in Pakistan is benefiting from a national occupational safety and health profile, ensuring safe and healthy workplaces,” he said.

He urged all stakeholders — workers, civil society, and the government — to work together to create a society that upholds labour rights and ensures decent employment opportunities.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) continues to call on Pakistan to improve enforcement of existing laws and ratify the 55 remaining labour conventions and protocols. Despite government initiatives, challenges such as low pay, lack of social protection, and weak representation remain persistent issues.

Senate Chairman Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani also released a statement on Labour Day, describing May 1 as “a shining symbol of determination, sacrifice, and human dignity.” He underscored that sustainable development is unattainable without guaranteeing the social, economic, and legal protection of the labour class.

As Pakistan joins the world in observing Labour Day, the leadership’s renewed pledges highlight the urgent need to transform commitments into actionable reforms for the country’s workforce.
