The Punjab government has announced the imposition of Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) from June 5 to June 11, 2025, to maintain public order, ensure safety, and curb health hazards during the Eidul Azha holidays.
A notification issued on Saturday outlines a series of concerns that prompted the move. Authorities reported that in previous years, citizens engaged in unhealthy practices such as burning the heads and feet of sacrificial animals in public, which created unpleasant smells and emitted hazardous smoke. Furthermore, the careless disposal of animal entrails into streets, drains, and sewerage systems often led to sanitary problems and sewer blockages.
The notification also expressed concern over the recurring trend of people swimming or bathing in canals, lakes, and rivers during the holidays — a dangerous activity that risks lives. Additionally, illegal cattle sale points set up in residential areas disrupt traffic and pose serious health risks.
“These activities are not only harmful to public health and safety but also cause resentment among the general public and disturb peace and tranquility,” the notification stated.
In response, the Punjab government has prohibited the following activities across the province from June 5 to June 11:
- Burning of animal heads and feet in public spaces
- Swimming, bathing, or boating in rivers, lakes, dams, and canals
- Disposing of animal offal and entrails in manholes, drains, or canals
- Establishing or operating unauthorized cattle markets
- Displaying arms and ammunition in public
Additionally, the Punjab Home Department clarified that the collection of animal hides will be strictly regulated. No banned organization will be permitted to collect hides during Eidul Azha. Only organizations officially registered with the Punjab Charity Commission are authorized to do so.
This preventive measure is aimed at safeguarding public health, reducing environmental pollution, and maintaining law and order during the festive period.
