The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has forecast 25% above-normal monsoon rainfall across Punjab this year, warning of potential hazards including thunderstorms, flooding, and landslides in hilly areas.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said the first spell of monsoon rain has already begun in the province and is expected to continue till July 1. “This year’s monsoon rains are predicted to be 25% more than average,” he said, citing data and alerts issued under the instructions of Punjab’s chief minister.

Widespread Rain Expected Across Punjab

According to PDMA, heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms is expected in a wide range of districts including Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad, and Sargodha.

In southern Punjab, including Multan, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar and Dera Ghazi Khan, rains are expected between June 26 and 28.

Relief Commissioner Punjab Nabeel Javed has directed all commissioners and deputy commissioners to stay on high alert. Emergency services including Rescue 1122, WASA, and Health Departments have been instructed to be fully prepared for rapid response.

Landslide and Flood Warnings

Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during thunderstorms, and tourists heading to Murree, Galiyat and other mountainous areas are urged to monitor weather updates closely due to landslide risks. “In case of emergencies, the public can contact the PDMA helpline 1129,” said the DG.

Karachi Set for Rain Relief This Friday

Meanwhile, in Sindh, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast isolated rain and thunderstorms in Karachi on June 27 (Friday), offering potential relief from the city’s ongoing heat and humidity.

According to PMD, the city will remain hot and humid over the next couple of days, with temperatures ranging between 34–37°C and humidity levels reaching up to 80%.

On Friday evening, light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorm is expected across Karachi and southern Sindh, including Tharparker, Umerkot, Badin, Thatta, Dadu, Larkana, and Hyderabad.

The Met Office attributes the weather shift to monsoon currents penetrating upper and central Pakistan, intensified by an incoming westerly wave. These systems are expected to cause thunderstorms and rain in Sindh’s eastern and northern districts, including Sukkur, Jacobabad, Khairpur, and Ghotki.

The PMD advises all residents to stay alert, particularly in low-lying areas and informal settlements, which are more vulnerable to urban flooding.
