Govt, Opposition Form Committees Over Punjab Assembly Suspension Row

The government and opposition have formed negotiation committees to discuss the reference filed against 26 suspended opposition members. The development follows weeks of political tension after the opposition staged a protest inside the assembly.

According to insider sources, the government’s negotiation committee includes senior leaders Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman, Salman Rafique, Rana Arshad, Samiullah, and Ahmed Iqbal. Additional members of the government’s negotiating team include Ali Haider Gilani, Shafi Hussain, and Shoaib Siddiqui.

On the opposition side, Leader of the Opposition Ahmed Bhachar will head the committee. Names of other opposition committee members—Ali Imtiaz, Sheikh Imtiaz, and Ijaz Shafi—will reportedly be sent to the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly later today.

Sources confirm that the second round of negotiations between the two committees is scheduled for Sunday. If the dialogue between the government and opposition proves fruitful, the Speaker may formally proceed with the reference to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the disqualification of the suspended members.

This development stems from events on June 27, when opposition lawmakers allegedly disrupted proceedings and caused damage during a Punjab Assembly session. As a consequence, Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan suspended the membership of 26 opposition legislators and signaled his intent to forward a disqualification reference to the ECP.

Political observers see the formation of these committees as a critical opportunity to ease tensions and restore order in the legislative process of Punjab’s provincial assembly. The next round of talks may prove pivotal in determining whether confrontation or compromise will define the political atmosphere in Punjab.
