Mass Protests Across Sindh Against Removal of 6 Canals from the Indus River

The Save the River movement has sparked widespread protests across Sindh against the controversial removal of six canals from the Indus River. Demonstrations were held from Karachi to Kashmore, with various political parties, social organizations, and activists coming together to voice their opposition to the decision.

The protests were organized by groups such as the Awami Democratic Party, Communist Party of Pakistan, Save Sindh Committee, and various labor unions. Rallies took place in major cities including Karachi, Mirpurkhas, Jacobabad, Sanghar, and Dadu, with leaders such as Faqir Abdul Qadir Shar, Ghulam Qadir Leghari, Imdad Qazi, and Dr. Safdar Ali Abbasi addressing the crowds.

The key issue driving the protests is the government's decision to construct new canals from the Indus River to irrigate lands in Punjab, which protestors argue will deprive the people of Sindh of their rightful share of water. Demonstrators claim that the project will lead to environmental destruction and threaten the livelihoods of millions in Sindh.

Leaders from various parties and communities condemned the move, emphasizing the significance of the Indus River to Sindh's economy and culture. They argued that such actions would not only harm the river’s ecosystem but also contribute to the ongoing water crisis in the province.

Protestors from cities such as Kot Ghulam Muhammad, Mehar, Sindhari, and others carried banners and raised slogans against the canal project, demanding the government reconsider its decision. The rally in Mirwah Gorchani and the dharnas in Tondobago were among the most notable demonstrations.

The widespread opposition highlighted the unity of Sindh's people in defending their environmental and water rights, with speakers stressing the urgency of protecting the Indus River from exploitation.
