Supreme Court Upholds Death Sentence for Man Who Killed Wife

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has upheld the death sentence of Ijaz, a convict found guilty of murdering his wife Safia Bibi in 2010. The apex court dismissed the appeal filed by Ijaz seeking acquittal.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Hashim Kakar reviewed the case and affirmed the rulings of the trial court and the Lahore High Court, which had also sentenced Ijaz to death.

The court’s written verdict highlighted that the convict failed to inform the police about his wife’s death and could not provide a plausible explanation for the unnatural death at their home. It further noted that Ijaz remained absconding for 37 days after the murder.

The judgment underscored the prosecution’s responsibility to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt, while also stating that the accused must offer a credible explanation in cases involving unnatural death.

This verdict sends a strong message on the judiciary’s commitment to delivering justice in heinous crimes such as domestic murder.
