The Sindh government has introduced major administrative reforms in the prison department. The changes aim to enhance oversight and efficiency by allowing civil service officers to hold key administrative positions.
Acting Governor Sindh, Owais Qadir Shah, has signed an ordinance approving amendments to the existing rules governing the prison department. Under the new ordinance, officers from the civil service can now be appointed to top posts such as Inspector General (IG) Prisons, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), and Jail Superintendents.
These changes come after a serious security lapse during an earthquake in the Malir area of Karachi, which enabled several inmates to escape from the prison facility.
According to police reports, 216 prisoners managed to flee during the incident. So far, 94 have been apprehended, while the rest remain at large.
The incident has raised significant concerns about prison management and security infrastructure. The government hopes that the administrative shakeup will introduce professionalism and discipline to prevent such lapses in the future.
