POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formally invited Opposition Leader Omar Ayub for a consultation meeting regarding the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and two members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), whose terms expired on January 26.
In a letter addressed to the opposition leader, the prime minister noted that under Article 218 of the Constitution, the process for appointing the CEC and ECP members requires mutual consultation, and proposals must be forwarded to the parliamentary committee responsible for electoral matters.
“I invite you to a meeting for consultation on the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and two members,” the letter read.
In response, PTI leader and Opposition Leader Omar Ayub confirmed that the letter from the prime minister was received on May 16. He expressed PTI’s willingness to engage in the constitutional consultation process for the appointment of the new CEC and ECP members.
The move comes amid growing calls for electoral reforms and institutional transparency. Observers view this exchange as a potential thaw in the frosty relations between the ruling coalition and the opposition.
A timely appointment to the Election Commission is crucial to ensure institutional continuity, especially with upcoming local government elections and potential general elections in sight.
